For me the most special thing I have achieved over the past seven years of running our operation is the friendships I have made with others who have become involved at a variety of levels. Friendships which I value, friendships with guyz of all ages. Today I want to mention some of the younger friends I have made. Not that the older friends are less important, of course they are, but my reasoning will become clear as you read on.

Friends like Tim, Rob, Douglas and of course Joseph. There are many more.

.

Oh how I wish I still had their youyj but please don't get me started on that ! Youth with a lifetime ahead, a lifetime of adventure as each builds up his own store of memories and experiences. How exciting the future is for each one of them.

Wonderful..........

But there are all too many of their age whose lives have been damaged.

Those who have fought for our country in Iraq and Afghanistan, who have been injured or even given their lives. My heart bleeds when I think of young men the ages of Tim, Rob, Douglas or Joseph giving so much in the cause of duty within our armed services. How much the causes of Iraq and Afghanistan are worth the lives of these boys is debatable.

But in this discussion the rights and wrongs of war do not matter, it is the young men who have fought, been injured or died who matter.

On the Sunday closest to November 11th each year in Great Britain we celebrate what is colloquially called POPPY DAY, in truth it is Armistice Sunday. Initially it was to remember those who had given their lives in The Great War, now known as World War One then later on World War Two was added to the rememberance.

As a child, who in spite of his advancing years, was born well after the end of the Second World War, poppy day was remote. I had an uncle who was a member of Bomber Command and had been killed just 9 weeks before the end of the war. But I never knew him.  My paternal grandfather served in the trenches of the First World War but he too died before I was born so I never knew him.

Today Poppy Day is far from remote as we remember and honour those who have given all in more recent conflicts as well as those from our history.  People are wearing poppies with pride to recognise this sacrifice, it is embarrassing to be out and about in public and NOT to wear a poppy.

Every day this week an elderly ex-serviceman has sat at the entrance to our local supermarket selling poppies. Others like him can be seen everywhere about the country. The symbolism of the poppy is perhaps the most important icon this country has.

It was only natural that the English and Welsh national football teams declared they would be wearing poppies on their team shirts in their forthcoming international matches.

Can you believe FIFA ?  Corrupt and dishonorable FIFA ?  FIFA an inward-looking self interest group of little people who rule over the world's most popular game !

THEY BANNED THE ENGLAND AND WELSH NATIONAL TEAMS FROM WEARING THEIR POPPIES ON TEAM SHIRTS.

There is more worth and value to this world in one finger nail of one soldier than there is in the entire body of the FIFA executive put together.

There has been an outcry.

Debate in parliament with unity from all sides of the political spectrum. Prince William wrote to FIFA to tell them what he thought.

What kind of insensitive people run FIFA ?  the same people who are tainted with prejudice and corruption. The same people who pursue their own self-interests ahead of sport.

In the end FIFA offered a compromise saying players could wear poppies on black arm bands.  I presume this is what will happen but in my opinion the players should wear their poppies with pride on their shirts and tell FIFA where it can stick it's ruling. Compromise or not this insensitive prejudice is so typical of Mr Blatter and his colleagues.

If you feel as strongly as I do about this issue I urge you to go to this link: http://www.fifa.com/contact/form.html and share your thoughts with FIFA.

While we have a lot of fun here in our community please never forget the sacrifices lads are making on our behalf.

THANK YOU
